It has a population of approximately 20 million people, with 66 percent of the population under the age of 25. The major ethnic groups in the country are the Chewa, Lomwe, Yao, Ngoni, Tumbuka and Sena. English is the country’s official language, spoken alongside other local languages.

The country adopts a presidential republic system of government that is administratively divided into 28 districts, including Lilongwe the capital of the country. Agriculture is the most important economic sector accounting for one-third of the country’s GDP. Moreover, 80 percent of the country’s export revenues come from the export of tobacco, legumes, sugar, and tea. High levels of public debt are a lingering problem.
