The major ethnic groups in the country are the Chewa, Lomwe, Yao, Ngoni, Tumbuka and Sena. English is the country’s official language, spoken alongside other local languages.

The country adopts a presidential republic system of government that is administratively divided into 28 districts, including Lilongwe the capital of the country. Agriculture is the most important economic sector accounting for one-third of the country’s GDP. Moreover, 80 percent of the country’s export revenues come from the export of tobacco, legumes, sugar, and tea. High levels of public debt are a lingering problem.
