Mozambique is a Southern African country with its land borders surrounded by Malawi, South Africa, Eswatini, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The country’s climate is both tropical and sub-tropical. It boasts a terrain consisting of coastal lowlands, plateaus, and mountains in the northwest and west respectively. The country’s population is approximately 31.3 million people. The predominant ethnic groups in the country include the Makhuwa, Tsonga, Lomwe and Sena. Portuguese is the official language of the country, spoken alongside the local languages.
The country is governed based on a presidential republic system that is administratively divided into ten provinces, including Maputo the capital of Mozambique. The agriculture sector is the main economic sector employing 74 per cent of the country’s population and the major source of foreign exchange earnings alongside the exports of aluminum, prawns, cashews, cotton, and sugar. Extreme poverty is one of the country’s major challenges — estimates suggest that 50 percent of the population lives below the poverty line.
