The objectives of this policy are to facilitate poverty alleviation through the sustainable utilization of animal genetic resources within the framework of the Animal Improvement Act, 1998 (Act 62 of 1998), to promote and support the identification, evaluation, breeding and use of genetically superior animals to improve the production and performance of animals used for food, agriculture, sport and recreation. It also aims to promote the sustainable use of Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) as a major contributor to National food security, facilitate the conservation of animal genetic resources for food and agriculture and reduce the risk of disease transmission through animal improvement.
