The government acknowledges the position of sound nutrition as a basic human right and prerequisite for attaining full intellectual and physical potential. Nutrition is seen as the outcome of a developmental process and not services to be delivered. The roadmap highlights the manifestations of malnutrition prevalent in South Africa and possible underlying conditions. The five-year roadmap seeks to direct nutrition-related activities in the health sector to the achievement of the sector’s four focus areas: life expectancy; maternal and child mortality; HIV and AIDS and tuberculosis; and strengthened health systems.
