The broad aim of this policy is to harmonise the three streams of forestry peculiar to South Africa – protection of forest national reserve; to feed the population, in terms of wood and raw material; and to improve the living condition of the populace through community forestry and agroforestry. The policy sets out to promote a sustainable thriving forest sector for the benefit of the nation and protection of the environment. The elements of the policy include; guiding principles, overall policy for the forestry sector, policy for industrial forestry, policy for community forestry, and policy that governs South Africa’s relation with states in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
